Schunnemunk Fork
Towering in its simplicity and mass, Schunnemunk Fork comprises two imposing weathering steel plates positioned in a shallow V-formation, embedded within the rolling landscape of Storm King. Each plate stands nearly 15 feet tall and stretches over 40 feet long, creating a dramatic spatial divide that cuts into the hillside with the precision of a blade.
Named after nearby Schunnemunk Mountain, the sculpture reflects Serra’s deep engagement with place, gravity, and viewer perception. The plates are not parallel but subtly diverge, shaping the surrounding space and the movement of the viewer through it. From one angle, the sculpture appears razor-thin—almost vanishing into the earth; from another, it asserts a monolithic presence that dominates the field.
True to Serra’s ethos, Schunnemunk Fork is not simply a static object but a spatial experience—one that unfolds through walking, turning, and bodily awareness. The weathering steel's evolving patina connects the sculpture to the passage of time, while its industrial form stands in tension with the pastoral setting, inviting contemplation of nature, form, and the act of seeing.
