Equal (2015)

Equal is a monumental work made from eight massive forged weathering-steel blocks, created by Richard Serra in 2015. Installed as four vertical stacks of two blocks each, the sculpture stands approximately 11 ft (3.4 m) tall per stack.

Each block measures roughly 60 × 66 × 72 in (152.4 × 167.6 × 182.9 cm). Serra rotated some blocks on their longer or shorter sides before stacking, creating variations while ensuring the stacks maintain the same total height. Individually, each cube weighs about 40 tons, contributing to the overall weighty presence of the installation.

True to Serra’s aesthetic, Equal emphasizes mass, balance, and spatial awareness. The arrangement of these heavy, rectilinear volumes within gallery space disrupts typical perception—inviting viewers to confront their own presence and the laws of gravity. The austere geometry and rusted patina echo the artist’s industrial background, and by stacking identical forms in varied orientations, Serra plays with notions of sameness and difference—suggesting sublime uniformity even within repetition.

Installed at MoMA in 2015 and exhibited at David Zwirner gallery, Equal marks a significant moment in Serra’s forged-steel practice—a dialogue between gravity, volume, and the human body. It exemplifies his ongoing interest in how material weight and form shape our perception of space, reinforcing his reputation as a pioneer of large-scale minimalist sculpture.
